The Story So Far…
With every new blog comes a new story… I’m Samuel, and this is my (our) adventure so far with a small bit of history included:
I’m 24, American, Muslim, and live in Kuwait. I have been here for a few years and plan on being here a few more. In July of 2007, with the power of the interwebanet, and my sarcastic request of “Find me an Arabic wife,” my friend introduced me to Lana. Iraqi, Good girl, good family, intelligent, honest, Muslim, thoughtful, etc. I could go on and on. We did the normal get to know you routine: past, present, and future. Then the wheels started turning and the problems arose.
In a perfect world, nationality would mean nothing; unfortunatey, this is reality. The brainstorming started and the task of getting us together began. Where to meet? How to tell the parents? How to get her here? Obstacles? Acceptance? Friends? College? This was just the tip of the iceberg. To save time, the rest of the story up until now will be in list form.
- I tell my family. No problems.
- She tells her family. Father has a problem.
- We decide I am British with American nationality. Father happy.
- Travel to Turkey. Lady who introduced us could not come. Father upset about this.
- Fall short on required papers for a marriage in Turkey. We were given the requirements for Turkish citizens.
- Father has an idea: “Al Qaeda are in Kuwait, no marriage. Let’s change your passport!” (SAM: Bad idea!)
- Return to respective countries.
- Inform Lana to tell father fake passport will not hold up to background checks. (SAM: The US is pretty thorough.) We agree to apply for a “College Visa.”
- Tell father Lana has to do the interview in Kuwait. Arrange transport and entrance into Kuwait.
This is where we are now. Provided there are no problems we should be together soon. Now, I know what you are thinking. “She can’t stay with you! You aren’t married.” Already covered as well. Now, here are the plans for after the arrival.
- Get visa to Jordan
- Fly to Jordan
- Get married. Everything taken care of there already.
- I return to Kuwait and start Visa paperwork.
- 5 days later, give or take, Lana comes to Kuwait as well.
Then there is applying for a US Visa, getting her registered for college, and the all important “adjustment phase.” More posts on that to come soon…
The above has been a short overview of where we currently stand.
