Torrents and Zain
I am on the verge of cancelling my Zain subscription, but I still have a few hangups. Right now, my torrent download speed is up and down, up and down, regardless of what I have my upload set to. So, these are my questions:
- Does Zain block the torrent ports thereby decreasing download speed?
- Does Wataniya block the torrent ports thereby decreasing download speed? (This is my alternative)
- Does Zain throttle down you bandwidth once you pass a certain amount of downloads, until the end of the month?
- How reliable are the Zain and Wataniya routers?
- I like being able to download torrents, and DSL is not available in my area (Mangaf.)

Hey,
We are in Mangaf and are getting DSL. Maybe you don’t have a phone yet?
Well sadly, I believe Zain use private IPs for their customers, meaning people won’t be able to initiate a connection with you (but you can initiate a connection with others, except people in the same boat as you are, and there’s a lot of them.)
I think Wataniya is the same, but someone can correct me on this.
If your IP starts with 10, or 192.168, or 172.16, then you have a private IP.
This doesn’t apply to people with DSLs since they can do port forwarding or UPnP on their routers even if they have private IPs.
1. Zain doesn’t usually block the torrent ports (as far as I know) because you and other Zain clients are sharing a single IP Address which means the DHT wouldn’t work properly.
2. Wataniya provides you with a dedicated IP Address usually (sometimes it doesn’t) so DHT should work… Though I remember my friends telling me there’s issues and all… But personally my download reached 3mbps for a while.
3. Zain kills your bandwidth when you reach 30GB as your total amount of downloads for the rest of the month… Atleast thats what I know after calling them personally and confirming that fact with few Zain clients.
4. I don’t know about Zain, but personally I don’t trust the new Ericsson router because its so limited in functionality and all… You could buy a Linksys Router that support 3G or something else…
5. I don’t know about Mangaf, I used my WNet connection while I was at Jlei’a and Khairan and it was good… Downloaded lotsa stuff from BitTorrent (Mostly Ubuntu DVDs back then)
But one thing for sure, gaming in WNet and Zain isn’t something to look forward for… DSL is a much better option… Hope this help even abit
@Carly - I sent you an e-mail. Hopefully we are in the same proximity. That would mean it should be available for me too. Alot of Block 1 is still under construction though.
@BoJacob - Not having port forwarding is killing me. I am wonderfing how adversely not having open connections to you affects DL speed, or if it does at all.
@Q8GEEK - I had read some places it did. I thought that’s what it was due to the low speeds I was getting. I am under my 30GB still though. I would consider upgrading the speed and having the unlimited plan, but I am going to check with Wataniya. If they don’t have a limit, I am gonna go with them I believe, if they have a decent router.
100% agree on the gaming! I could be downloading at 150kbps or something on the Zain connection and can still get 1100 latency or higher in World of Warcraft!
